MILEY CYRUS claims she wasn't trying to be sexy when she did what she did at the "MTV Video Music Awards".
In an extensive interview with "Rolling Stone", she said, quote, "If I was trying to be sexy, I could have been sexy. I can dance a lot better than I was dancing."
And she admitted that her stubby pigtails made her look like, quote, "a little creature."
She added, quote, "We could have even gone further, but we didn't. I thought that's what the 'VMAs' were all about! It's not the Grammys or the Oscars. You're not supposed to show up in a gown, Vanna White-style."
Miley also wonders why SHE is taking all the flak for that performance, while ROBIN THICKE got a free pass . . . quote, "No one is talking about the man behind the ass.
"It was a lot of 'Miley twerks on Robin Thicke,' but never, 'Robin Thicke grinds up on Miley.' They're only talking about the one that bent over. So obviously there's a double standard."
She also hit back at BROOKE SHIELDS . . . an early critic of Miley's performance, who also played Miley's dead mother on"Hannah Montana".
Miley said, quote, "Brooke Shields was in a movie where she was a prostitute at age 12!"
(That movie was 1978's "Pretty Baby". And while it was definitely controversial, there's no doubt it's more highly-regarded as a work of art than what Miley did at the "VMAs" will ever be.)
But Miley also gave us hope that we won't have to see any more performances like that from her . . . quote, "Now people expect me to come out and twerk with my tongue out all the time. I'll probably never do that [crap] again."
(Don't count on it, though . . . especially since that same "Rolling Stone" interview features Miley topless on the cover and LICKING HER OWN SHOULDER. Here's the pic.) (E! Online)
